Criminals fool parents with fake call from child
Parents should take acute measures against voice cloning, which uses artificial intelligence (ai) to mimic the voice of a daughter, son or other family member. The Fraud Help Desk considers the danger so great that it recommends agreeing on a code word with your child in advance. If your child calls with a message of doom and a request to transfer money quickly, you can then easily check their identity. Fraud can thus be prevented.
The Dutch Police Federation is deeply concerned about this new form of crime made possible by ai, reports the AD. Cloning votes has become a piece of cake. Federation president Jan Struijs says he has received disturbing signals from investigators. Bureau Jeugd en Media also thinks it makes sense to agree on a code with your child.
Ai expert Henk van Ess doubts the usefulness of such a code word. Because if a child calls that something serious has happened to him, you quickly forget to ask for a password. Moreover, cybercriminals have already found a solution. They make voices difficult to understand by producing a lot of traffic noise in the background. If parents ask for a code word, scammers make the "fake child" say that he cannot understand them.
