Come see performances by our authors and illustrators

How do we bring books to life in the classroom? If you want inspiration, come to the Gottmer booth (booth number 01.A090). We have authors and illustrators on the program every day who will talk about their books and give lesson suggestions. Afterwards there will be time for questions and signing. You will also have a chance to win a book package for your school library.

The program

Tuesday, January 24 - 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. - Patsboem!
The books When it was war(1914-1918 as well as 1939-1945) are not only interesting for children to read, browse and look at. They also lend themselves to in-depth study. The authors of the books (together Patsboem!) specialize in creating teaching materials and offer a wonderful tool to accompany the book: visible thinking, a research-based conceptual framework that aims to integrate the development of students' thinking with content learning. With visible thinking, students are challenged to see beyond a first glance.

Patsboem! shows you how visible thinking works.

Wednesday, Jan. 25 - 11 a.m. - Bette Westera

The Golden, Silver and Bronze Pencil, the Woutertje Pieterse Prize, the Book Lion, nomination for the Bean, the Golden Poetry Medal, Flag and Pennant: language virtuoso Bette Westera has them all to her name. Applauded by professional juries and the media, the comparison with Annie M.G. Schmidt is never far away. Last year she wrote the Children's Book Week gift and this year she is with us in the booth.

Westera will talk about Doodgewoon (Gouden Griffel 2015) and Was de aarde vroeger plat? (Zilveren Griffel 2018) and how to use them in the classroom. Both books she created with illustrator Sylvia Weve.

Wednesday, Jan. 25 - 2 p.m. - Ted van Lieshout and Philip Hopman

In 11 years, the tough farmer from Farmer Boris has become one of Holland's most beloved children's book characters. Thanks to the boundless energy of Ted van Lieshout and Philip Hopman (ill.) a whole generation has grown up with Farmer Boris, his brother Berend, sister Sam and the merry gang of animals on the farm.

Performances by this golden duo are always a hit, with Van Lieshout reading aloud and Hopman drawing simultaneously. If you would like to see them live, visit the Kleuteruniversiteit booth, booth number 01. A074

Thursday, Jan. 26 - 2 p.m. & 3 p.m. - Geert-Jan Roebers

Geert-Jan Roebers is originally a biologist and this is reflected in his wonderful books: Don't be afraid of the wild animals (theme title Children's Book Week 2017), The goby & the shrimp, Brilliant plants and Species Treasure: all books starring plants and animals about which he writes engagingly and with humor.

Roebers will talk about his most recent books, Brilliant Plants and Species Treasure, which he created with illustrators Margot Westermann and Pieter Fannes, respectively.

Friday, Jan. 27 - 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. Rian Visser

The AVI series Blitz! by Rian Visser & Lars Deltrap (ill.) is written especially for beginning readers and for children who have trouble reading. The books are also set in a font that even helps dyslexic readers. The popular series will be 10 years old in 2023 and a total of almost 86,000 copies have been sold.

In this lecture, Visser talks about her secret of writing - which she has been doing for another 25 years - and gives tips on reading and reading aloud.

Saturday, January 28 - 11 a.m. - Iven Cudogham
Iven Cudogham wants his picture books to introduce as many preschoolers as possible to the age-old stories about Anansi the spider. That his picture book series is being noticed is evidenced by last Children's Book Week when Anansi the spider - Stronger than Elephant was one of the theme titles. The beautiful illustrations are by Moldybyrd Studio.

Cudogham treats you to a read-aloud story and animations about the little mischievous spider. He will also tell you about his plans to make Anansi even better known. Tip of the hat: there are Anansi lesson packages for your school.

Saturday, January 28 - 2 p.m. & 3 p.m. - Marc ter Horst
Griffel winner Marc ter Horst talks about his informative children's books, such as Palmen op de Noordpool (Vlag & Wimpel, Glazen Globe, 13 translations), Viruswereld (Zilveren Griffel, nomination Woutertje Pieterse Prijs) and Scheten uit de schoorsteen. The first two books he made with illustrator Wendy Panders, the last with Yoko Heiligers.

Ter Horst reads aloud and shows how to use the books in such subjects as geography, nature and history.
