Ambassadors of education
The title Teacher of the Year is awarded in four categories: primary education, special education, secondary education and secondary vocational education. The four winners are the face of the profession and ambassador within their sector for a year. That means they make an impact during the year by promoting the teaching profession at various times and championing issues that affect the quality of the profession. They are often invited to talk shows, participate in education debates with colleagues, policy makers, politicians on radio and TV and make contributions in education trade magazines. For example, they are guests at Big Improvement Day, a day that traditionally highlights positive developments in education, among other things, and are often invited as guest speakers at a variety of education events.
For all 12 nominees, they have been fulfilling this role very enthusiastically for almost a year. The curl that the winners received therefore symbolizes the recognition and appreciation for all teachers in the Netherlands.
The expert jury...
The jury consists of teachers from the various sectors and representatives of the most important organizations in education. The jury looks at the teacher's qualities, (teaching) career, motivation and nomination. The jury then comes to a decision based on an interview in which they also consider the extent to which the teacher knows how to inspire others.
