Although we in the IT sector are aware of the energy consumption of IT services and the share of green power in our sector is unprecedentedly high (88 percent of Dutch data centers run on green power), most companies are missing quite a few opportunities to reduce their power consumption.
With current energy prices, there is suddenly a dire need to work on this. Especially since the power consumption of IT facilities is high. Data centers in the Netherlands alone use 2.8 percent of all Dutch electricity (source: Dutch Datacenter Association). Of course the data centers themselves have to work on their sustainability, but as a purchaser of ict services you have a big influence. How big depends on how you purchase the infrastructure on which your software runs.
